As the world grapples with the ongoing refugee crisis, the role of hotels in providing temporary shelter to those in need has become increasingly significant. These temporary accommodations not only offer a safe haven for refugees but also serve as a poignant symbol of the passing of time and the uncertainty that accompanies displacement. One elemental feature that occupies a ubiquitous presence in hotels is the clock. Found in every room, lobby, and hallway, these timepieces silently tick away, marking the passage of minutes, hours, and days. For refugees seeking solace in these temporary abodes, the ticking of the clock becomes a constant reminder of the tumultuous journey they have embarked upon and the uncertain future that lies ahead. In many ways, the presence of clocks in hotels serves as a poignant reflection of the transient nature of refuge, where time seems to both stand still and rush by in a whirlwind of unfamiliar surroundings and emotions. For refugees, whose lives have been upended by conflict, persecution, or disaster, the relentless march of time can evoke feelings of anxiety, longing, and hope as they wait for news of their fate. Moreover, the presence of clocks in hotels also underscores the resilience and adaptability of refugees in the face of adversity. As they navigate unfamiliar surroundings and cultures, refugees must learn to synchronize their internal clocks with the rhythms of their new environment, adjusting to mealtimes, check-in schedules, and daily routines dictated by the hands of the clock. In this sense, the simple act of glancing at a clock in a hotel room can evoke a complex array of emotions for refugees - from a sense of urgency and restlessness to a quiet determination to persevere and rebuild their lives in the face of uncertainty. As the world continues to grapple with the challenges posed by the global refugee crisis, perhaps we can all take a moment to reflect on the symbolism of clocks in hotels and the profound reminder they offer of the passage of time, the resilience of the human spirit, and the urgent need for compassion and understanding in a world fraught with displacement and unrest.
